Climate Change &
Greenhouse Gasses

What is climate change?
Climate change is the long-term changes that we see in Earth’s weather patterns and temperatures. These changes can be natural when there are volcanic eruptions, fluctuations in solar radiation, tectonic shifts, and changes in our orbit. However, research shows that in the recent centuries this change has been due to industrialization and other human activities.

What are greenhouse gasses?
What do they have to do with climate change?
When humans burn fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas, it releases something called greenhouse gasses. The most common greenhouse gasses are carbon dioxide and methane. These gasses absorb the sun’s heat that radiates off Earth’s surface and trap it in Earth’s atmosphere, leading to what we call climate change.

How does it affect you?
Climate change can lead to an increased frequency of extreme weather events and rising sea levels. This will threaten our individual health by affecting the food and water we consume, as well as the air we breathe. However, it does not just affect you at the moment, it also affects the future generations to come. Climate change will increase the risk of illness and cause more health problems due to higher temperatures and poor air quality.

What can I do to make a difference?
Although it is a vast global problem, there are many things we can do as a community daily to make a difference.
-
Air conditioners and heaters emit large quantities of carbon
-
➡️ instead open a window or put on a jacket
-
-
Some showers use gas-water heaters
-
➡️ try to shower for less time, and consider replacing your shower with a more eco-friendly heating system in the future
-
-
Transportation is the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions
-
➡️ try to carpool or use public transportation, find shorter ways to destinations, and consider an electric vehicle when purchasing your next vehicle
-
-
Non-sustainable brands contribute to the pollution of our environment
-
➡️ try to buy and support brands that you know are eco-friendly
-
-
The process of producing animal-based foods releases a large amount of carbon into the air
-
➡️ try to minimize consumption of animal-based products, maybe even consider being vegetarian/vegan in the future
